This is also the first film by Emmerich to be set entirely in the present day, as all his previous films had either flashbacks or scenes taking place during historical events within or around that time period. It was also the first film of 2012 to be released in theatres. The film's title comes from its central plot device: an immense global cataclysmic event that occurred on December 21, 2012.. The film's marketing campaign included an alternate reality game which involved the use of realtime global positioning satellite tracking to find "artifacts" related to the film. The film begins in NASA Mission Control when Flight Director Chuck Price (Kim Coates) notices increased solar flare activity in Earth's upper atmosphere. Because of this, he calls his daughter, Hannah (Thandie Newton), because he'll be working late at the office and cannot make their family dinner appointment. At about the same time in Moscow, astronomical observatory computer systems detect a strange object passing through Earth's upper atmosphere. A Russian nuclear submarine, commissioned to investigate the anomaly, launches an acoustic/gravity wave weapon at the object, but it fails to detonate. In the early morning hours of December 21, 2012, a massive solar flare erupts from the sun and travels through Earth's atmosphere to reach a high point of 36.9 North. It triggers a chain reaction in Earth's upper atmosphere which produces a powerful electromagnetic pulse that disables almost all electrical systems on Earth for over two minutes, including the power grids of the world's major cities. During this time, American astronaut Jack Harper (John Lithgow) is in orbit on "Columbia" when he becomes blind after wearing spacesuit goggles. He calls Mission Control for help and they ascertain that something must have happened to his eyes. cfa1e77820
